The 4GEON project   this   promoting geoeducation in the Colca Geopark and Andagua Volcanoes, Peru, a site designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. As part of the guidelines of this organization, the implementation of educational activities with the local population at various levels is encouraged, integrating knowledge about the natural and cultural heritage of the area.

A recent field trip included the participation of Dr. Alexander Menaker and students from the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción School in Andagua. During the day, an introduction to archaeology as a science was offered, explaining the relevance of archaeological studies in the district of Andagua,   and the key aspects that were investigated, in order to raise awareness about the value of historical heritage.

The activity took place near the ancient Chahui llacta, where pre-Hispanic settlements and the dating methods used for their study were explained. The students, organized in groups, actively participated in the search for historical vestiges, finding remains of pottery and painted stones that provide a vision of the area's past.

At the end of the day, a group reflection was held on the importance of protecting the cultural heritage of the Geopark. The students were able to ask questions about the ancient inhabitants of the Andagua district, which further enriched their learning experience.

This field interaction between students, teachers, and the 4GEON project team and Dr. Alex Menaker proved to be a dynamic educational experience. Learning about the geomorphological landscape of the region was promoted, fostering an understanding of the relationship between geology, culture, and the natural environment.

The main objective of the 4GEON project is to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the territory, highlighting how natural and cultural elements interact, such as flora, fauna and traces of ancient civilizations, in the context of the Colca and Volcanoes of Andagua Geopark.
